Why do conference interpreters work in pairs?

Simultaneous interpretation requires listening, processing and speaking at the same time in another language. To maintain quality, accuracy and vocal security, the international standard is to work in a team of 2 interpreters who alternate every 20-30 minutes in the booth or with portable equipment.

Why in pairs?

• Sustained quality: alternation avoids fatigue and errors.

• Real-time support: technical terminology, figures, proper names.

• Continuity: if there are unforeseen events (technical failures, cough, sanitary pause), the colleague covers without interrupting the event.

• Health and safety: voice and concentration have limits; two professionals guarantee stable performance.

Why do you charge by the day and not by the hour?

• Intensive preparation: study of materials, glossaries and previous context (often >2× the duration of the event).

• Agenda blocking: exclusivity on the date; it is not feasible to chain multiple events on the same day.

• Logistics and changes: transfers, tests, trials and possible program adjustments.

• Industry standard: up to ~6 effectivehours of interpreting per day, with regulatory breaks.

Note: interpreting equipment (booth, receivers, microphones) is quoted separately when applicable.
